Are Electronic Cigarettes safe?

With all of the talk in the press about electronic cigarettes, many people are asking the question "are electronic cigarettes safe?".
Although there has been no official testing carried out to answer this question 100%, the independent testing carried out indicates that electronic cigarettes are a healthier alternative to regular cigarettes.
Tobacco cigarettes are one of the significant contributing risk factors in coronary heart disease. Smoking increases blood pressure and increases the risk of blood clots. In a study carried out last year by the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center, researchers tested the effects of electronic cigarettes on the ability of the coronary arteries to supply the heart with blood and oxygen. Smokers were tested before and after smoking 2 tobacco cigarettes on one day and after using an electronic cigarette with 18mg/ml nicotine for 15 minutes on a different day. After smoking 2 cigarettes, it was observed that there was a 16% reduction in coronary blood flow and a 19% elevation in resistance to flow. After using the electronic cigarette, no difference in coronary blood flow and resistance was recorded.
A traditional tobacco cigarette contains around 4000 chemicals including more than 70 cancer-causing chemicals such as tar, formaldehyde, arsenic and benzene, as well as hundreds of other poisons including carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide. Tobacco cigarettes also pose a passive smoking risk as cigarette smoke contains these same chemicals, and just 30 minutes of exposure to second-hand smoke can reduce blood flow in a non-smoker’s heart. Electronic cigarettes have no known passive smoking risks.

Euro MP's last week rejected plans to treat electronic cigarettes as medicinal products, however official testing of electronic cigarettes is expected in the next couple of years with many countries already moving towards this. In the meantime, it is agreed by most that compared to tobacco cigarettes, electronic cigarettes are a healthier alternative with many positive points.
