What is an eliquid?
Posted by 2 on
Electronic cigarettes contain a flavoured liquid called eliquid, this usually consists of 4 main ingredients; Nicotine, Propylene Glycol (PG), Vegetable Glycerine (VG) and food grade flavouring.
Eliquid can be purchased in bottles suitable for filling an ego-t tank or empty cartomisers, or in pre-filled cartomisers suitable for standard electronic cigarettes.
About the ingredients
Nicotine
Nicotine is a highly addictive chemical found in plants of the nightshade family including the tobacco plant. Nicotine is a stimulant that increases chemical levels in the brain such as dopamine which is why many people struggle to quit smoking. When people stop smoking tobacco cigarettes, these chemicals levels drop and cause withdrawal symptoms.
Nicotine on it's own is not as harmful as smoking because the cancer-causing chemicals in cigarettes are found in the tar, carbon monoxide and other substances. The nicotine in electronic cigarettes allows you to receive the nicotine intake without the other dangerous chemicals found in cigarettes.
Propylene Glycol
Propylene glycol or PG is a good grade chemical found in many every day products such as medicines and mouthwashes. Propylene Glycol is also known as food additive E number E1520. It is a clear, sweet, odourless liquid.
Vegetable Glycerine
Vegetable Glycerine, Vegetable Glycerol or VG is a carbohydrate derived from plant oils. It is resistant to freezing and is found in many every day products such as toothpaste, sugar substitutes and gum disease treatments.
Different levels of PG and VG in eliquids change the amount of vapour the electronic cigarette will produce. Flavour and throat hit typically comes from higher PG levels and the vapour from higher VG levels.
